​Hills Limited, originally known for the iconic Hills Hoist clothesline, was founded in 1945 by Lance Hill in Adelaide, South Australia. Hill’s innovative design of a height-adjustable rotary clothesline quickly became a staple in Australian backyards, symbolising suburban life in the 1950s and 1960s. ​
In 1948, the company was formally established as Hills Hoists Ltd, with Hill as chairman and his brother-in-law, Harold Ling, as a director. The company experienced rapid growth, expanding its product range to include playground equipment and television antennas. By 1957, Hills Hoists Ltd had become Australia’s largest manufacturer of rotary clotheslines and a leading producer of television antennas. ​
The company went public in 1958, rebranding as Hills Industries Limited. Over the following decades, Hills diversified into various sectors, including electronics, home hardware, and building products. In 2010, reflecting its broader focus, the company changed its name to Hills Holdings Limited and later to Hills Limited in 2013.
